Almost every business owner I've spoken to over the past few months has told me the same thing: 'We can't get good staff' or 'They are jumping for a dollar' or 'I could do 3-4 times more work (or just catch up the backlog!) if only I could get more staff!' The recruitment game is
being played on a very competitive field.
How businesses approach the game will decide who gets the best staff and becomes the better for it. Your process impacts what you'll get out of it - and it is a process, not a magic formula. By building your employer brand you put yourself in the best position to win the war for talent. It's similar to how you build your business brand in the market, because you are absolutely 'selling' yourself and your business to prospective staff.
In a climate where there is a very high demand from employers for the position you have available, the “Rules of the Game” change. Here are a few things you may need to consider:
- Getting into a $/hour wage war with your competitors will not necessarily find you the best person for your organisation. Do you really want to be up against the guy with the deepest pocket?
- How clear are you on the exact role you need to fill? Just because you may need to replace an employee, or you need more staff due to increased workload, be careful that you are not short-sighted or too direct. Be clear on who you ACTUALLY need on your team. Analyse the main services or products you supply. Remember 80% of your sales comes from 20% of your customers. Then look at your current team structure. Are there holes?
- Ask yourself...Exactly what skills do I need to fill? Do they all need to be in a single role, or can you break that role down further?
- What’s unique about your organisation? Why would someone want to work for you? What do your employees value most in their workplace/job? If you don’t know then I suggest you find out.
